Natural coir doormats suit cottage and traditional entrances, while slim rubber or metal boot scrapers give a modern, unfussy look. For a coordinated entryway, match the doormat colour to your front door or house number plaque. Oversized doormats (90x60cm or larger) make a bolder statement and give visitors more room to wipe both feet properly. If your porch is covered, you can be more adventurous with colours and fabrics; exposed doormats should stick to weather-resistant materials that won't fade or absorb water.

A doormat should be at least as wide as your door frame — typically 75–90cm for a standard UK front door. Check your door's swing clearance so the mat doesn't catch underneath. Basic coir and rubber doormats cost £8–£20, mid-range branded designs run £20–£45, and premium heavy-duty mats with drainage channels or custom sizes can reach £50–£80. Replace outdoor mats every 2–3 years, as worn fibres lose their dirt-trapping ability.
