Coir Doormats

The warm, natural tone of plain coir complements stone, brick, and wooden doorsteps beautifully — it's the quintessential English country doormat. For a more contemporary look, choose coir mats with geometric prints or bold graphic text in black on the natural background. Layering a smaller printed coir mat on top of a larger plain one creates a welcoming two-tone entrance. If your front door is painted a strong colour, a plain coir mat keeps the focus on the door itself.

Standard coir doormats (60x40cm) cost £6–£15, while larger 90x60cm mats run £12–£30. Rubber-backed versions cost a few pounds more but last longer and stay put on smooth surfaces. Expect to replace an outdoor coir mat every 1–3 years depending on exposure to rain — sheltered porches extend lifespan considerably. When the mat wears thin and stops trapping dirt effectively, it can go straight into the garden compost.
