Your Guide to Chandeliers
A chandelier makes a statement like no other light fitting can. It draws the eye upward, adds a sense of occasion, and transforms even a simple room into something that feels special. Once reserved for grand dining rooms and entrance halls, chandeliers have evolved into a much broader category — today's designs range from minimalist geometric frames and sculptural sputnik shapes to traditional crystal tiers and rustic farmhouse styles.
The common thread is drama. Whether it's a modern brass ring suspended above a dining table or a cascading glass design in a double-height hallway, a chandelier tells the room that someone cared enough to make a considered choice overhead.
Style & Trends
Modern chandeliers suit rooms you might not expect. A sleek geometric design above a kitchen island, a beaded chandelier in a bedroom, or a statement piece in a bathroom (with appropriate IP rating) all add a layer of surprise and sophistication. Scale is critical: a chandelier that's too small disappears, while one that's too large overwhelms. In rooms with standard 240 cm ceilings, choose fixtures that hang no more than 50 cm from the ceiling to preserve headroom. For higher ceilings, you have more freedom to go taller.
What to Look For
Size the chandelier to roughly one-half to two-thirds the width of the table below it. In rooms without a table, add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by 7 for the fixture diameter in centimetres. Hang the bottom of the chandelier 75–85 cm above a dining table. Budget £100–£300 for well-designed modern styles, £300–£800 for designer pieces, and £500–£2,000+ for crystal or handmade artisan fixtures. Always check the ceiling fixture's weight rating before ordering a heavy chandelier.
Quick Checklist
- Size: room dimensions in feet, convert to inches
- Hang 30–34 inches above dining table
- Consider ceiling height requirements
- Install dimmers for ambiance
- Check weight and mounting requirements
