Your Guide to Area Rugs
An area rug defines a space within a room — it anchors seating arrangements, softens hard floors, and adds warmth and colour underfoot. In open-plan living areas, rugs are one of the best tools for creating distinct zones without walls, separating a lounge area from a dining space with nothing more than a change in texture.
From traditional Persian-inspired patterns to contemporary abstract designs, the variety of area rugs available today means there's something for every room and every style. Wool, cotton, jute, and synthetic blends each bring different qualities, so the right choice depends on where the rug will live and how much traffic it needs to handle.
Style & Trends
Neutral flatweaves in cream, grey, or natural jute suit almost any room and let furniture do the talking. For a bolder statement, a patterned rug in muted tones can tie together disparate furniture pieces and wall colours. Layering a smaller patterned rug over a larger plain one adds depth to a room without committing to a single look. In bedrooms, a soft wool or cotton rug positioned so it extends 60–90cm beyond each side of the bed gives you a warm landing when you step out in the morning.
What to Look For
Size is the single most important decision — an undersized rug makes a room feel disjointed. For living rooms, a 200x300cm rug fits most seating layouts. Dining rugs should extend at least 60cm beyond each side of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Prices range widely: machine-made synthetics start from £50–£100 for a 160x230cm, wool blends run £150–£400, and handwoven or hand-knotted rugs start around £300 and climb into the thousands. Always add a non-slip rug pad underneath — it protects both the rug and your floor.
Quick Checklist
- Front sofa legs on rug, back legs off is ideal
- Leave 8–24 inches bare floor around room edges
- Use rug pads to prevent slipping
- Consider traffic patterns and durability
- Layer rugs for added texture
